Understanding your rights and our procedures during tarmac delays

Our Commitment During Delays

Great North Airlines is committed to ensuring passenger comfort and safety during any tarmac delay. This plan outlines our policies and procedures in accordance with Canadian Transportation Agency regulations.

Time Limits

We will not permit an aircraft to remain on the tarmac for more than 3 hours for domestic flights and 4 hours for international flights without providing passengers an opportunity to deplane.

  • Domestic flights: Maximum 3 hours
  • International flights: Maximum 4 hours
  • Regular updates every 30 minutes
  • Clear communication of delay reasons

Essential Services

For all tarmac delays, we will provide:

  • Adequate food and potable water no later than 2 hours after leaving the gate
  • Operable lavatory facilities
  • Adequate medical attention if needed
  • Comfortable cabin temperature

Special Assistance

We ensure passengers with disabilities and special needs receive appropriate assistance:

  • Priority assistance for passengers with disabilities
  • Special attention to unaccompanied minors
  • Medical support coordination
  • Mobility assistance as required

Communication

We maintain clear communication throughout any delay:

  • Updates every 30 minutes during delays
  • Notification of deplane opportunities
  • Reason for the tarmac delay
  • Estimated departure time when known

Exceptions to Time Limits

The time limits for deplaning may be extended only in the following exceptional circumstances:

Safety & Security

The pilot-in-command determines there is a safety-related or security-related reason why the aircraft cannot leave its position

Air Traffic Control

Air traffic control advises that returning to the gate or another disembarkation point would significantly disrupt airport operations

Your Rights as a Passenger

During any tarmac delay, you have the right to:

Request to deplane after applicable time limits
Access to working lavatories
Adequate food and water after 2 hours
Medical attention when needed
Updates on delay status every 30 minutes
Information about the reason for delay
Notification when deplane opportunity is available

All Great North Airlines personnel receive comprehensive training on our tarmac delay procedures:
